PCI CEO Sundall Announces Reitrement

Michael D. Sundall, FACMPE, has announced that he will retire as Chief Executive Officer of PCI on December 31, after 13 years with the organization. A recruitment search process has been initiated to seek a replacement for the position.

Sundall joined Physicians’ Clinic of Iowa in May 2008 and led PCI’s decade-long transformation into one of the area’s most trusted medical providers. Most notably, Sundall spearheaded the construction and operational execution of PCI Medical Pavilion, the area’s first “medical mall” concept. Opened in 2013, the Medical Pavilion the first of its kind in eastern Iowa, bringing together specialty healthcare clinics and complementary services under one roof.

PCI enjoyed years of record growth and expansion under Sundall’s visionary leadership. The organization significantly increased patient volume, added more than 30 physicians and midlevel providers and several new specialties, including hematology & oncology, bariatric surgery, plastic and reconstructive surgery, spine center, vascular and endovascular surgery, walk in care, primary care and physical medicine and rehabilitation.

In 2011, the organization announced the construction of the 200,000 square foot PCI Medical Pavilion and then in 2019 the expansion of the 100,000 square foot PCI Medical Pavilion 2, which opened to the public in early 2020. Not only did the new facility accommodate PCI’s needs for additional space and expansion of new specialties, it added several thousand square feet of available space for business growth in the MedQuarter district.

“I am so proud of the accomplishments our teams have made and I’m grateful to have worked with so many dedicated, forward-thinking professionals. PCI is truly a family and I could not have imagined being anywhere else,” Sundall said. “I’m looking forward to spending more time with my family and I’m excited about the future of PCI. This organization remains energized and ready to deliver the highest quality care in eastern Iowa.”

Prior to joining Physicians’ Clinic of Iowa, Sundall served as CEO of Huntington Internal Medicine Group (HIMG) in Huntington, West Virginia, where he implemented the “medical mall” facility concept.  With over 48 years of experience in health care administration and community service, he has also served in Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, and Florida.

A native of Boone, Iowa, Sundall earned a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in Finance from Minnesota State University and is a member of the Medical Group Management Association (MGMA) and a Fellow of American College of Medical Practice Executives (FACMPE).
