PCI and SCCR Team Up to Reach Outpatient Joint Milestone

This week marks a tremendous milestone for Physicians’ Clinic of Iowa (PCI), Surgery Center Cedar Rapids (SCCR) and our community. PCI Orthopedic Surgeons completed the 200th outpatient total joint replacement procedure at SCCR.

“I cannot emphasize enough the amazing teamwork and dedication required to streamline these complicated procedures and bring this level of patient care to Cedar Rapids,” said Michael Sundall, Chief Executive Officer at Physicians’ Clinic of Iowa. “We are one of the very few surgery teams in this area with the level of cooperation and expertise required to complete such a high number of successful surgeries. We hear over and over how satisfied patients are with their experience and care from PCI and SCCR.”

Patients who qualify for outpatient joint procedures arrive at PCI in the early morning, have a total joint replacement performed at Surgery Center Cedar Rapids, receive physical therapy at PCI, then are ready to go home in the evening. These patients avoid a costly hospital stay and recover in the comfort of their own homes.

PCI’s Dr. Jeff Nassif brought the outpatient total joint concept to our community in 2016, with significant support from Dr. David Hart, PCI President and Orthopedic Surgeon, and Dr. Carrie Dykstra, Anesthesiologist. An extensive program was developed, including pre-admission evaluation, physical therapy and joint class education, which effectively prepares patients for this substantial procedure and recovery process, while in the comfort of their own home. Dr. Tom Paynter, PCI Orthopedic Surgeon, recently joined the outpatient team, as he introduced navigation to an already successful program. Congratulations to the SCCR joint class nurses, SCCR operating room joint specialists and Patti Recker, PA-C & Jenny Botsford, ARNP, both at PCI, who coordinate patient care from pre-admission through recovery.
