Is There Anything I Can Do To Prevent Prostate Cancer
September is National Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, with the intent to increase public awareness of the importance of prostate health and screenings, education about risk factors and symptoms, and advocacy for further research.
While there is no sure way to prevent cancer, there are some things you can do to potentially lower the risk.
According to the American Cancer Society, some studies have found that men who are overweight or obese have a higher risk of developing advanced prostate cancer or prostate cancer that is more likely to be fatal.
“The links between diet, obesity and prostate cancer are still being studied. We still have much to learn,” said Rikka Burroughs, DNP, ARNP, CUNP, PCI Urology. “But, while there is not a hard link, it is still good practice for overall health to eat healthy and exercise. Not only will you stay at a healthy weight, but many chronic conditions such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, sleep issues and gastrointestinal issues like GERD, are greatly affected by diet. Staying fit, active and eating well also leads to overall wellbeing and a better quality of life.”
- Get to and stay at a healthy weight.
- Be physically active.
- Follow a healthy eating pattern, which includes a variety of colorful fruits and vegetables and whole grains, and avoids or limits red and processed meats, sugar sweetened beverages, and highly processed foods.
