How do I know when to call a doctor about my foot pain?

Foot pain is very common and can adversely affect daily activities and quality of life. But, how do you know if your foot pain is temporary or something more serious?

There are a few red flag symptoms that, if present, should be seen by a podiatrist immediately. If you:

  • Have severe pain or swelling.
  • Have an open wound or a wound that is oozing pus.
  • Have signs of infection, such as redness, warmth and tenderness in the affected area or you have a fever over 100 F.
  • Are unable to walk or put weight on your foot.

Then you should call immediately for an appointment.

The foot is very complex, with many joints, tendons, muscles, ligaments and fine bones that can be easily injured. Other conditions, such as diabetes and vascular problems, can also affect the feet.
