CEDAR RAPIDS—June 23, 2011— Physicians’ Clinic of Iowa (PCI), a multidisciplinary medical specialty group, proudly congratulates Mir Wasif Ali, MD and Ryan D. Dempewolf, MD on passing their board examinations. 

Dr. Ali, with Physicians’ Clinic of Iowa – Surgical Specialists, recently received board certification in cardiothoracic surgery from the American Board of Thoracic Surgery.  Board certification in a medical specialty is evidence that a physician's qualifications for specialty practice are recognized by his or her peers.  Cardiothoracic surgery encompasses the operative, perioperative, and surgical critical care of patients with acquired and congenital pathologic conditions within the chest.  Included are the surgical repair of congenital and acquired conditions of the heart, including the pericardium, coronary arteries, valves, great vessels and myocardium. In addition, cardiothoracic surgeons treat diseases of the lung, pleural space, esophagus, and chest wall.  Dr. Ali is also board certified in general surgery by the American Board of Surgery.

Dr. Dempewolf, with Physicians’ Clinic of Iowa – Ear Nose & Throat (ENT) / Head & Neck Surgery, recently received board certification from the American Board of Otolaryngology (ABOto.) While licensure by individual states sets the minimum competency requirements to practice medicine, it is not specialty specific. Board certification is a voluntary program in which specialists seek to improve their performance and demonstrate a commitment to their profession.  Disorders of the ear, nose, sinuses, allergies, thyroid and parathyroids, throat and voice box, snoring and sleep apnea treatment, as well as head and neck cancer are just a few of the many issues Dr. Dempewolf treats.
