Lecture Description:  This review of potential pitfalls in the care of hand injuries is designed to alert non-orthopedic health care providers to the problems associated with misdiagnosis, and under or over treatment of a broad spectrum of hand injuries.  We will review the pertinent anatomy and pathology of potential problematic hand injuries.  Specifically, we will discuss fractures, lacerations, nerve and soft tissue injuries to the hand and how pitfalls can be avoided in these common injuries. We will discuss proper  x-ray technique and interpretation and show a series of illustrative cases where deceptively normal x-rays led to significant patient morbidity. We will also discuss how complex injuries may go unrecognized, similarly leading to significant patient morbidity.  Clinical cases will be presented.

Duration:  Approximately one hour

Objectives:

  1. Physicians and Healthcare providers will understand the complexity of problems associated soft tissue injuries.
  2. Physicians and Healthcare providers will recognize potential pitfalls for missed diagnoses of common hand injuries.
  3. We will review the appropriate clinical evaluation and radiographic studies for a variety of hand injuries.  Avoiding the pitfalls will improve patient outcomes and practitioner’s competence.
